WHITE SPOTS IN FISH When your fish are afflicted by ick, small white spots appears on their bodies. The parasites burrow into the skin of their victim to feed on blood and dead cells. This causes the skin of the fish to swell and produce cysts which appear as white spots. Infected fish may scratch against rocks or gravel in an effort to get relief from the irritation. After feeding for a week, these noxious critters mature, then dig their way out of the host body and sink to the bottom of the aquarium. Soon after it settles onto the substrate, the ick secretes a soft, jellylike membrane which encloses it. Within this protective cocoon, the organism rapidly divides into hundred of baby parasites know as tomites. Once the tomite mature, they leave the membrane in search of new host bodies and the vicious circle renews itself. Unless effective remedy is swiftly undertaken, ick will continue to grow and proliferate. It is during this stage that the swimming parasites are searching for new host that they are vulnerable to medication. Once they are burrowed their way into a fish, they are well protected from chemicals.
